Stem Cell Therapy Q & A

What are stem cells?

Stem cells are unique among cells because they have two exceptional abilities. First, they can self-replicate by dividing to produce a new cell. Stem cells can repeat this process indefinitely, creating new cells throughout your body as long as you’re alive. They can even remain inactive for a long period of time, then start self-replicating again when needed.

The second distinguishing feature of many stem cells is that the new stem cells they spawn can develop or differentiate to become specialized types of cells, such as a muscle cell or a red blood cell.

At the start of life, embryonic stem cells differentiate to produce every type of tissue needed for a fetus to develop. Throughout your life, adult stem cells take over for embryonic stem cells.

Your body contains many different types of adult stem cells. Some adult stem cells are highly specialized and when they self-replicate, their new cells develop into one specific tissue. Other types of adult stem cells, however, have the ability to self-replicate and produce new cells that differentiate into numerous types of tissues.

Your body uses adult stem cells to replace old tissues and repair damaged tissues. Stem cell therapy takes advantage of this natural regenerative ability to heal injuries and degenerative diseases like arthritis.

What is stem cell therapy?

Stem cell therapy consists of injecting adult stems cells directly at the site of a musculoskeletal injury or into arthritic joints. This type of therapy supports healing at any time, but it’s especially beneficial if you suffered a severe injury or your natural healing response is slow. Stem cells also accelerate healing when they’re applied during surgery.

One study found that patients who received rotator cuff surgery healed more quickly when stem cells were used during surgery compared to those who didn’t receive stem cell therapy. And 10 years later, 87% of those who received stem cells still had an intact rotator cuff, compared to 44% of the untreated patients.

What type of adult stem cell is used for my therapy?

The adult stem cells used in your therapy are called mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). They’re especially valuable because they develop into numerous musculoskeletal tissues, and they’re found in body fat and bone marrow. As a result, we can easily extract them in the office and use your own MSCs for your injection.

When MSCs are injected, they go to work doing their natural job:

  • Reducing inflammation
  • Accelerating healing
  • Increasing blood vessel growth
  • Secreting proteins that promote new tissue growth
  • Developing new cartilage, ligaments, tendons, muscles, bone, and fat

The types of tissues that develop are determined by what your body needs to heal.

What health conditions are treated with stem cell therapy?

The doctors at SoCal Regenerative Medical Clinics use your MSCs to help heal musculoskeletal conditions responsible for pain in your neck, shoulders, elbows, lower back, hips, knees, and ankles. In many cases, stem cell therapy helps patients avoid the need for surgery.

These are a few examples of conditions that may benefit from stem cell therapy:

  • Osteoarthritis

  • Torn ligaments
  • Herniated discs
  • Bursitis
